Lawmakers in Nepal’s House of Representatives have urged the government to address shortages of cooking gas and reform the subsidized distribution system to ensure assistance reaches people who genuinely need it.
During an unscheduled session, lawmakers argued that state-subsidized cooking gas should be targeted at vulnerable households rather than being distributed broadly at a loss to the government.
They also raised concerns over limited access to healthcare among poor and marginalized communities, particularly maternal health services. Lawmakers called for the expansion of the government’s Aama Surakshya Karyakram (Safe Motherhood Program) to cover comprehensive maternal healthcare rather than focusing only on childbirth services.
The lawmakers also demanded the immediate implementation of Nepal’s electronic government procurement system, or e-GP, which is intended to make public procurement more efficient and transparent.
Meanwhile, the House Business Advisory Committee, chaired by Speaker Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal, has finalized the parliamentary business schedule through October 1.
