Today marks the 101st birth anniversary of Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, the founding leader of the Nepali Congress, fondly remembered as Kisunji in the political sphere. Known as the Saint Leader (Santaneta), Bhattarai’s legacy of integrity, simplicity, and unwavering dedication to democracy continues to inspire.

A Life of Humility:

Kisunji, who served as the Prime Minister of Nepal during the interim government in 2047 BS, epitomized humility. He famously left the Prime Minister’s residence in 2048 BS with only a tank, a surahi (pitcher), and an umbrella, returning to his rented home in Kupandole.

 A Spiritual Leader:

Bhattarai openly declared his ultimate goal as liberation (nirvana), a rare stance for any politician. Swami Anand Arun recalls Kisunji’s profound connection to spirituality, noting his role in inaugurating Osho Tapoban and his dedication to meditation.

Politics of Integrity:

A staunch advocate of loyalty and honesty, Bhattarai never hesitated to speak the truth, even acknowledging his weaknesses. He remained in Nepal during tumultuous times, establishing the Nepal Students Union and enduring imprisonment for his beliefs.

Honoring His Legacy:

In his centenary year, the Sant Neta Krishna Prasad Bhattarai Kendra was established to promote his ideals. Lokesh Dhakal, the center’s chairman, emphasizes the need to understand the reasons behind Bhattarai’s emotional departure from his own party to truly honor his legacy.

Senior journalist Purushottam Dahal describes him as a politician untouched by greed for power or wealth, a rare gem in the political landscape.

Let us remember Kisunji’s contributions and ideals today, reflecting on the values of integrity, simplicity, and dedication to the nation.
