In a significant move to safeguard social harmony, Nepal government has officially announced the ban on the popular social media platform, TikTok.

The decision was reached during a Cabinet meeting held at the residence of Prime Minister at Baluwatar, as confirmed by Rekha Sharma, Minister for Communications and Information Technology and the government’s spokesperson.

Expressing the government’s rationale behind the ban, Minister Sharma highlighted concerns about TikTok contributing to the deterioration of family structures and social relations. She stated, “TikTok is constantly spreading propaganda that disrupts our family values and social bonds. To regain control over this situation, we have decided to halt TikTok temporarily.”

During the meeting, the Cabinet directed the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to oversee the technical aspects of implementing the ban. Minister Sharma added, “The decision to close TikTok has been made today, and the relevant authorities are actively working on the technical aspects. Both the Communication Ministry and the Nepal Telecommunication Authority have already initiated preparations, and it is anticipated that the decision will be implemented from today.”

This move comes as part of the government’s broader strategy to maintain social harmony and protect cultural values. The ban on TikTok is expected to address concerns related to the platform’s impact on societal structures, with a particular focus on family dynamics and interpersonal relationships.

As the authorities work on the technicalities of enforcing the ban, the public awaits further details on the duration and extent of the prohibition. The decision to shut down TikTok reflects the government’s commitment to navigating the evolving landscape of social media and its potential impact on the fabric of Nepalese society.
