Kathmandu, September 11, 2025 – Former Prime Minister and senior political leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has issued a message to the youth of Nepal participating in the recent Gen Z protests, urging them to pursue their demands through democratic and constitutional means.

In his statement, Bhattarai expressed optimism about the movement, noting that it is “gradually heading towards a peaceful resolution” and congratulated the youth for their efforts. However, he cautioned that the challenges ahead are significant and require prudence, patience, and careful navigation.

Key Points from Bhattarai’s Message

  1. Democracy Remains Intact

Bhattarai stressed that despite political turmoil and ongoing protests, Nepal has not become constitutionless or stateless. Fundamental pillars of democracy—including the Constitution, Parliament, President, and permanent state organs—remain functional. He warned that losing sight of these foundations in the pursuit of immediate change could risk what the country already has.

  • Protecting Sovereignty and State Authority

The former Prime Minister emphasized that at this critical moment, the most important priority is to safeguard Nepal’s sovereignty, autonomy, territorial integrity, and state authority, as enshrined in Article 274(1) of the Constitution.

  • Interim Government and Elections

Bhattarai called for a swift response to the movement’s demands by forming an interim government with the involvement of representatives from the Gen Z protests, aiming to hold fresh general elections. Importantly, he stressed that all actions must remain within the framework of the existing Constitution to prevent political chaos.

  • Role of the President and Parliament

The statement urged direct engagement with the President, who serves as the highest representative and guardian of the state. Bhattarai also highlighted that the Parliament can be convened even for a single day to make necessary constitutional arrangements, ensuring that emerging political forces remain actively involved rather than resigning prematurely.

  • Avoiding Hasty Decisions

Warning against impulsive actions, Bhattarai noted that rushing to resign or bypass democratic procedures could push Nepal into a “terrifying dark tunnel, a Black Hole.” He called on all parties and leaders to act responsibly and cooperatively during this critical period.

Analysis and Context

Bhattarai’s message comes amid growing tensions following the Gen Z protests on September 9, which were initially sparked by social media restrictions and demands for better governance. The protests escalated in several areas, leading to acts of vandalism and clashes with authorities.

By addressing the youth directly, Bhattarai emphasizes a democratic approach and discourages violent or unconstitutional measures. His focus on the President and Parliament underscores the importance of institutional mechanisms in resolving political crises. The call to protect sovereignty and state authority reflects a broader concern that Nepal must navigate political change without compromising its legal and constitutional framework.

Overall, Bhattarai’s statement is a cautionary yet supportive message to the youth: the protest movement’s energy should be channeled through democratic means, respecting constitutional provisions and working collaboratively with state institutions to achieve meaningful reform.
