The inaugural World Meditation Day is being observed today with great enthusiasm across Nepal and the world. This global observance aims to promote awareness of the benefits of meditation for physical and mental well-being.
The United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed December 21 as World Meditation Day earlier this month, acknowledging the importance of mental health and spiritual practices for overall health. The declaration is seen as a significant step in promoting global well-being and inclusivity in mental health initiatives.
Nepal’s Participation in the Global Meditation Marathon
On this occasion, a global 32-hour marathon meditation event is being organized, drawing participation from millions worldwide. In Nepal, various religious, spiritual, and cultural organizations have embraced the day by organizing numerous programs.
The Government of Nepal has endorsed this historic UN decision and announced official celebrations nationwide. Yoga, meditation, and spiritual organizations, such as the Nepal Maharishi Vedic Foundation, Jeevan Vigyan, Patanjali Sanstha, and Brahma Kumari Rajayoga Sewa Kendra, have arranged events to promote mindfulness practices.
The Nepal Maharishi Vedic Foundation kicked off its celebrations with a mass meditation session at 8:45 AM in its centers, Global Mother Divine, and 90 gurukulas across the country. “This is a historic moment to unify people through meditation and realize its transformative power,” said Deepak Prakash Baskota, Chairperson of the Foundation.
Highlighting the Cultural Significance in Nepal
Meditation has deep cultural and spiritual roots in Nepal, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, whose teachings emphasize mindfulness and inner peace. Nepalese organizations and communities have expressed pride in the global recognition of meditation and its role in fostering harmony and resilience in challenging times.
Global Celebrations of Meditation Day
Around the globe, World Meditation Day is being celebrated with retreats, workshops, and large-scale public meditation sessions. The worldwide meditation marathon has united individuals from diverse cultures and traditions, emphasizing the universal appeal of meditation.
As the world faces increasing stress and mental health challenges, this day is expected to inspire individuals to adopt meditation as a path toward improved mental and emotional well-being.
World Meditation Day serves as a reminder of the need for holistic approaches to health and the shared responsibility of individuals and governments to ensure the highest attainable standard of mental well-being for all.
