Nepal Commemorates Centenary of the 1923 Nepal-UK Friendship Treaty

Special Program at Hanuman Dhoka Highlights Treaty's Historic Significance and Bilateral Contributions

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a special program at Hanuman Dhoka, Durbar Square, Kathmandu, on Sunday to commemorate the centenary of the Nepal-United Kingdom Friendship Treaty of 1923.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Narayan Prakash Saud, delivered remarks underscoring the Treaty’s importance and its enduring impact on bilateral relations between Nepal and the United Kingdom.

The event featured UK Ambassador to Nepal, Rob Fenn, who also spoke on the significance of the Treaty and its role in fostering strong ties between the two nations. Historian Prof Dr Tri Ratna Manandhar, serving as the keynote speaker, provided a comprehensive discourse on the Treaty, delving into its context and historical sequences.

A collection of rare photographs and documents related to the 1923 Treaty were prominently displayed during the program, offering attendees a visual journey through the historical agreement. The Nepal Army band added a cultural touch to the commemoration with a musical performance titled ‘Nyauli Baaja.’

The event saw the participation of parliamentarians, ambassadors, diplomats, chiefs of security bodies, former foreign secretaries, former ambassadors, and representatives from the media. The commemoration reaffirmed the enduring bonds established by the Nepal-UK Friendship Treaty, symbolizing a century of diplomatic cooperation and mutual respect between the two nations. Ancient
