Cristiano Ronaldo, a forward for Portugal, believes that the Saudi Pro League can become a “top-five league in the world” if it attracts more star players.
Ronaldo, 38, says Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema, and Luka Modric are “very welcome” to join him in Saudi Arabia, where they have been linked with transfers.
After entering in December, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has completed his first season with Al Nassr.
He has a contract through 2025 and stated that he “will continue here” for the upcoming season.
Paris Saint-Germain has confirmed that Lionel Messi will depart the club this summer, and the 35-year-old Argentine forward currently serves as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia.
Benzema and Modric, two of Ronaldo’s erstwhile Real Madrid teammates, are believed to be seeking lucrative exits at the end of their careers.
In an interview with the SPL, Ronaldo stated, “If they are coming, big players and big names, young players, ‘old players,’ they are very welcome because if that occurs, the league will improve slightly.”
“The league is very excellent, but I believe we have ample room for improvement. The league is extremely competitive. We have excellent teams with excellent Arab athletes. However, they need to enhance the infrastructure somewhat. Even referees and the VAR system should be a bit faster.”
Ronaldo’s second stint with Manchester United concluded in November 2012 when his contract was mutually terminated.
After becoming the only player to score in five different World Cups, he scored 14 goals in 16 games to enable Al Nassr of Riyadh finish second behind Al Hilal, the champions.
Ronaldo, who holds the records for most international goals and appearances, added, “I believe they need to improve on other small details.”
“However, I am content here, I intend to remain here, and I will remain here. And if they continue to do the work they want to do here for the next five years, I believe the Saudi league can become one of the world’s top five leagues.”
