Fares of public transportation has decreased in the Bagmati Province, also in Kathmandu Valley.

Nine days after Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) drastically dropped the price of diesel, the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Transport has lowered the tariff.

The Ministry has reduced the cost of using public transportation on short routes inside the province of Bagmati.

The Nepal Gazettee has announced the lowered transportation fee.

Asman Tamang, secretary at the Ministry, stated that the fare has been reduced by 5.9% in the Kathmandu Valley, 4.18 in public vehicles, and 5.69 in goods-carrier vehicles operating on short routes outside the Valley, according to the most recent fare set by the Ministry for public transportation.

As it has already been published in the Gazettee, the reduced public transportation fare would take effect today, he said.

Prior to this, the transport business owners had set the tariff on their own because the cost of public transportation for short-distance vehicles had not changed despite an increase in the price of diesel.

At that time, the cost of public transportation was raised only for those vehicles traveling vast distances.

Diesel prices had been lowered by NOC as of last Wednesday.

Immediately after that, the government raised the cost of long-distance public transportation.

The federal government sets the long route or interprovince transportation fare, whereas the provincial governments sets the short route or intermunicipality transportation fare.

On April 3, the NOC reduced the cost of gasoline, diesel, and kerosene by three rupees a liter and by ten rupees each.

Since last Wednesday, the price of fuel and gasoline has been decreased by Rs 10 per litre. Diesel now costs Rs 155 per liter, according to the lowered fuel price.

Last year, the cost of using public transportation for short routes within the province was raised. Passengers in the Kathmandu Valley are now charged Rs 20 as part of the increased transportation fee.
