Nomination filing for prez election today

Today is the deadline for submitting nomination papers for candidates running to become the Democratic Republic of Nepal’s next president. The election will take place on March 9 of this year.

According to Assistant Election Officer Amrita Kumari Sharma, nomination papers for candidates for the position of President may be registered at the Office of the Election Officer on the grounds of the federal parliament building in Naya Baneshwar from 10 am to 3 pm today.

According to the law, a candidate for the position of president must have the support of five MPs, five of whom must second their proposal.

On March 9, from 10 am to 3 pm, voters will choose the new head of state. 

The President is elected by the Electoral College including members of the Federal Parliament (House of Representatives and the National Assembly) and the Provincial Assembly. 

A total of 882 people, including 332 members of the federal parliament and 550 representatives from each of the seven provincial assemblies, will vote to elect the president. The provincial assembly member’s vote weight is 48, whereas the federal MP’s vote weight is 79.

A member of the Federal Parliament who has reached the age of 45 and is not barred from running for president by any legal provisions may do so. A person may only be elected to the position of President twice, and their time in office will last five years from the date of their election.

At the compound of the Parliament building in Baneshwar, separate polling places have been set up for members of the federal parliament and members of the provincial assemblies. According to Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapalia, voting will take place on March 9 from 10 am to 3 pm once all required election procedures have been followed. Plans have also been made to reveal the results of the vote by 7:00 pm on the same day.
