The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has taken a stern stance on the government’s decision to ban the popular social media app TikTok and has directed internet service providers (ISPs) to confirm whether they have enforced the ban.
In a public notice issued today, the NTA has mandated that ISPs submit their responses within the next 24 hours. Failure to comply may result in the cancellation of their licenses.
Surya Prasad Lamichhane, the Deputy Director and Information Officer at NTA, disclosed that a prior notice had been issued to all internet and mobile service providers, seeking information regarding the status of TikTok ban implementation. Regrettably, the NTA has not received any updates on the matter, prompting the issuance of the latest ultimatum.
The government of Nepal officially decided to prohibit the use of TikTok during a Cabinet meeting on November 13, citing concerns about its ‘negative impact’ on social harmony. The NTA’s proactive measures to ensure compliance with the ban underscore the government’s commitment to addressing the perceived issues associated with the platform.
The 24-hour deadline set by the NTA reflects the urgency with which the authorities aim to curb the use of TikTok in the country. The potential cancellation of licenses adds a serious dimension to the consequences for ISPs that fail to adhere to the ban, signaling the government’s resolve in enforcing the decision.
The TikTok ban in Nepal aligns with global concerns surrounding the platform’s impact on various aspects of society, from privacy issues to content concerns. As the NTA awaits responses from ISPs, the tech community and social media users in Nepal keenly observe the unfolding developments and anticipate the enforcement of the government’s decision in the coming days.
