In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Jajarkot and Rukum West, Nepal, the government and local authorities are working tirelessly to rebuild lives and provide urgent relief to affected communities.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that the construction of temporary shelters is nearing completion, with data collection efforts 90% complete across the districts.
Under the careful supervision of Ward Chairpersons, Nepal Police, and Red Cross Society representatives, data collection, detailing the extent of human, physical, and animal damage, is set to conclude by November 24. The government, with an allocated amount of fifty thousand Rs for each temporary residence, is poised to distribute funds post-cost completion.
A team of 800 technicians will assist in the swift construction of temporary shelters, prioritizing the needs of the elderly, pregnant women, and families with children. Despite the progress, health concerns have surfaced, particularly among vulnerable groups grappling with increased health issues such as headaches and fever.
To address these challenges, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an appeal for heightened attention from all agencies, recognizing the rising health risks due to nighttime cold. In response to the tragic loss of 154 lives in the earthquake, families are receiving financial assistance from the government—200 thousand Rs per person and an additional 100 thousand Rs for families.
Simultaneously, in Rukum West, the first phase of relief distribution has been successfully completed, providing essential support to affected families. Prabesh Badhuwal, Assistant Chief District Officer of Rukum West, confirmed the conclusion of the rescue efforts and initial relief distribution in areas like Athbiscot Municipality and Sanibheri Rural Municipality.
A range of essential items, including tarpaulins, blankets, quilts, mats, rice, pulses, salt, and oil, were distributed, addressing the immediate needs of earthquake-affected households. Monetary assistance has also been extended to families who lost loved ones, ensuring that support reaches all affected families in the ongoing recovery efforts.
