In a landmark move to protect public health, the National Health Education Information and Communication Center has issued a strict ban on smoking and tobacco consumption in all public places across Nepal. This new regulation is designed to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.

Where Smoking and Tobacco Use Are Banned:

Smoking and using tobacco products are now prohibited in the following areas:

  • Hotels, Restaurants, and Bars: All types of hospitality venues, including resorts, motels, eateries, student hostels, and guest houses.
  • Government Buildings: Any government office, agency, or institution.
  • Educational Institutions: Schools, colleges, libraries, training centers, and health-related institutions.
  • Transportation Hubs: Airports, airlines, and all forms of public transportation.
  • Care Centers: Child Welfare Homes, Old Age Homes, Orphanages, Kindergartens, and Clubs.
  • Workplaces: Industrial and call centers.
  • Entertainment Venues: Movie theaters, cultural centers, and performance venues.
  • Public Toilets: All public restrooms.
  • Sports and Fitness Venues: Stadiums, gyms, swimming pools, and sports halls.
  • Retail Stores: Departmental stores and mini markets.
  • Religious Places: Dharamshalas and other places of worship.
  • Transport Facilities: Waiting rooms and ticket counters for public transportation.

Legal Consequences for Violations:

  • Fines and Penalties: Individuals caught smoking or using tobacco in these public places will face legal action and penalties as per Section 17 of the Tobacco Products (Control and Regulation) Act 2068.
  • Mandatory Notices: All listed public places must display clear no-smoking notices. Failure to do so will result in fines of up to Rs. 5,000 for the responsible manager or office head.

Protecting Private Spaces:

  • Residential and Private Vehicles: Smoking inside homes or private vehicles is also restricted if it affects others, ensuring everyone’s right to a smoke-free environment.

This comprehensive ban, enforced by the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population, is a significant step towards reducing the harmful impacts of smoking and tobacco use. By adhering to these new regulations, citizens can contribute to a healthier, smoke-free Nepal.
