New Directive Published by Ministry of Home Affairs
The government has announced that a national identity card will be mandatory for all real estate transactions starting January 14, 2025. The Ministry of Home Affairs published this directive in the gazette, stating that the national ID card will now be required for buying and selling land or houses, replacing the previously required citizenship certificate.
Wide-Ranging Impact
Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, explained that this move aims to implement the national identity card system effectively. The new requirement extends beyond real estate transactions, impacting various other sectors and services:
- Banking and Financial Institutions: National ID will be mandatory for all banking services.
- Social Security Fund and Health Insurance: Both sectors will require the national ID for service access.
- Pension and Revenue Services: Personal income tax registration and other revenue-related services will now need a national ID.
- Driver’s License and Company Registration: Obtaining or renewing a driver’s license and company registration will require the national ID.
- Telecommunications: From January 14, 2025, a national ID will be needed to acquire a SIM card for mobile telephone services.
Ensuring Efficient Public Service Delivery
The notice emphasizes that public services provided by government agencies, organizations, and the private sector will now require the submission of a national identity card or a national identity number instead of a citizenship certificate. This measure is intended to streamline and enhance the efficiency of service delivery across the country.
