Kenyan capital, Nairobi, was rocked by a colossal gas explosion, claiming the lives of at least three people and leaving nearly 300 others injured.

The incident occurred in the Embakasi district at approximately 23:30 local time when a gas-laden lorry exploded, unleashing a catastrophic fireball that engulfed the surrounding area.

Eyewitnesses captured the devastation on video, revealing the intensity of the blaze perilously close to residential blocks and commercial properties. Initial reports suggested the explosion originated from a gas plant, but authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of the disaster.

Embakasi police chief Wesley Kimeto confirmed the tragic death of a child in the explosion, underscoring the possibility of a rising death toll as rescue efforts continue. The Kenya Red Cross has been at the forefront of response, reporting that 271 individuals have been transported to hospitals, with an additional 27 receiving on-site medical attention. Among the injured are at least 25 children, many suffering from inhalation-related injuries.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura Mwaura described the aftermath as catastrophic, detailing how the fireball extensively damaged residential houses, businesses, and vehicles. A garments and textiles warehouse was also consumed by flames after a flying gas cylinder struck it during the explosion.

Survivors shared harrowing accounts, with Boniface Sifuna recounting his escape, “I got burnt by an exploding gas canister as I was trying to escape. It exploded right in front of me, and the impact knocked me down, and the flames engulfed me. I am lucky that I was strong enough to get away.”

The Kenya Red Cross, through social media updates, conveyed their relentless efforts to battle the flames, while the government set up a command center to coordinate rescue operations and secure the blast scene.

As the nation mourns the lives lost, Kenyans are urged to avoid the cordoned area to facilitate ongoing rescue missions. The investigation into the cause of this tragic gas explosion is underway, and the city remains on edge awaiting further updates. Stay tuned for more details as this story develops.
