The medical cause of death for former One Direction member Liam Payne has been confirmed as polytrauma, according to the opening of a UK inquest. The popular singer tragically passed away on October 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires.
Polytrauma, a term used to describe multiple traumatic injuries sustained across the body and organ systems, was confirmed by Dr. Roberto Victor Cohen during the hearing. The inquest, held at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court on December 17, highlighted that further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death would take time, as authorities are awaiting more details from the ongoing investigation in Argentina.
Cause of Death and Investigations
Dr. Cohen clarified that Payne’s death resulted from the fall, which led to severe injuries. Multiple trauma and internal and external hemorrhage were determined to be the immediate causes. The prosecutor’s office in Argentina also revealed that toxicology tests indicated traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s body, contributing to his fall. Medical reports suggest Payne may have fallen while in a semi-conscious or unconscious state, ruling out the possibility of a voluntary or intentional act.
Authorities in Argentina have charged five individuals in connection with Payne’s tragic death. Among those charged are Gilda Martin, the hotel manager, and Esteban Grassi, the hotel receptionist, along with Payne’s friend Roger Nores. They face manslaughter charges, while two other individuals have been charged with supplying drugs.
Investigation and Future Developments
Although the UK inquest has confirmed the cause of death, it is still awaiting further information from the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office to address the full circumstances. The investigation is being led by Senior Coroner Crispin Butler, who confirmed the ongoing probe in Argentina may take time to conclude.
Payne’s untimely death shocked fans worldwide, especially after his rise to stardom as part of One Direction on The X Factor in the 2010s. Following the band’s hiatus in 2016, Payne pursued a solo career, but his tragic passing at the age of 31 left the music community in mourning.
A Final Farewell
Payne’s funeral was held in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, in November, with his former One Direction bandmates, including Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik, among those who paid their respects. Payne’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, and former partner, Cheryl, also attended the service, along with family and friends.
As investigations continue into the cause of Payne’s fall and the role of others in the incident, his fans and loved ones remain focused on his legacy in the music world.
