The Kathmandu Municipal Corporation (KMC) has officially enacted a complete ban on the storage, sale, distribution, and consumption of tobacco products, effective from today. This decision, announced on November 28 after a 15-day public notice period, aligns with the provisions outlined in the Tobacco Control and Regulation Act, 2068 BS.

Naveen Manandhar, the spokesperson for KMC, emphasized that the ban encompasses all types of tobacco products, including raw tobacco and gutkha. To ensure strict compliance, the KMC is deploying municipal police, some in plain clothes, to monitor the enforcement of this decisive measure.

“If tobacco products are found in any shop during monitoring, action will be taken to confiscate them up to two times, and the shop will be closed if found in violation for the third time,” stated Naveen Manandhar, underscoring the seriousness of the enforcement strategy.

The KMC, recognizing the importance of community involvement, has also called upon citizens to contribute to the success of the initiative. Individuals are encouraged to use the KMC Police Force’s hotline at 18105000060 or reach out via telephone at 01-5901763 and 01-5901764 to report any violations of the ban.

This bold move by the Kathmandu Municipal Corporation reflects a commitment to creating a healthier environment for its residents, aiming to reduce the prevalence of tobacco-related health issues and promote overall well-being within the community.
