Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Liberal Party leader on Monday, citing “internal battles” and acknowledging he is no longer the best choice to lead in the next election. He will remain prime minister until the party elects a new leader.

Trudeau’s announcement comes in the wake of growing political turmoil, including the abrupt resignations of key Cabinet members such as Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. Parliament, originally scheduled to reconvene on January 27, will remain suspended until March 24 to facilitate a leadership race.

The opposition parties have vowed to bring a no-confidence motion against the Liberal Party, making a spring election almost inevitable. Polls show the Liberals trailing far behind the Conservatives, 47% to 21%.

Trudeau, who took office in 2015 after a decade of Conservative rule, initially garnered acclaim for his progressive policies, including legalizing cannabis, championing diversity, and introducing a gender-equal Cabinet. However, his popularity has waned due to soaring costs of living, increasing immigration, and dissatisfaction with policies such as carbon taxes and vaccine mandates.

The political challenges are compounded by international tensions. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has threatened tariffs on Canadian goods over migration and drug trafficking concerns, creating additional pressure on Trudeau’s government.

Freeland, who resigned in December, criticized Trudeau’s economic priorities, including a sales tax holiday and direct financial payouts to citizens, describing them as unaffordable amidst the looming tariff threat.

Trudeau’s nearly decade-long tenure saw a blend of progressive reforms and contentious decisions, but scandals and economic frustrations have taken their toll. His father, Pierre Trudeau, remains a celebrated figure in Canadian history, but Justin’s departure marks a stark contrast to his initial rise as a political star in 2015.
