Israeli forces have entered Gaza’s largest hospital, embarking on a targeted operation to locate and neutralize alleged Hamas infrastructure and weapons.

The military operation, unfolding without gunfire, involves thorough room-to-room searches and interrogations, according to a journalist on the scene.

Soldiers, accompanied by tanks, have reportedly entered the main emergency department as part of the mission. Israel contends that Hamas operates a command center in tunnels beneath the hospital, a claim supported by U.S. intelligence. However, Hamas vehemently denies these allegations, labeling the hospital raid as a war crime.

The situation has raised concerns as hundreds of civilians, seeking refuge alongside patients and staff, are present in the hospital. The White House emphasizes the imperative to protect civilians, asserting that “hospitals are not battlegrounds,” echoing sentiments echoed by the UN’s humanitarian chief.

This military action follows Israel’s response to Hamas’s October 7 attacks, which resulted in the death of 1,200 people and the hostage-taking of over 200. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, more than 11,000 people, including over 4,500 children, have lost their lives in Gaza since the conflict began. The unfolding events underscore the complexities and humanitarian challenges in the region.
