The Ministry of Health and Population has clarified that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), reportedly seen in China, is a common virus and urged the public not to panic over misleading information circulating on social and traditional media.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry highlighted that respiratory infections are naturally more prevalent during winter and that HMPV is not a new virus but one that has been previously detected in Nepal, causing mild cold and cough. The ministry assured that Nepal has adequate testing, monitoring, and response mechanisms in place.
The virus poses a low risk of severe illness and typically affects individuals with weak immune systems, young children, and the elderly. However, surveillance and vigilance have been heightened across hospitals, laboratories, and health institutions to ensure preparedness.
The ministry advised the public to follow health guidelines for infectious diseases like HMPV and MPox, including wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, washing hands regularly, and maintaining hygiene. It also urged people to avoid close contact with sick individuals, seek medical advice if unwell, and contact the “Hello Health Call Center 1115” for further assistance.
