First case of monkeypox detected in Nepal

The Ministry of Health and Population says that the first case of Monkeypox (Mpox) was found in the country on Friday.

The Ministry’s Spokesperson, Dr. Samir Kumar Adhikari, said in a statement that the virus was found in a foreigner.

“A 60-year-old woman from another country who had symptoms like monkeypox was checked out at a hospital in Kathmandu,” Dr. Samir said.

“Mpox infection was confirmed today after a sample was taken from the suspected woman’s body and tested at the National Public Health Laboratory in Teku,” he said.

The statement said that more study is being done on this infectious disease.

The World Health Organization says that the sickness, which can be passed from person to person and from animal to person, has spread to 111 countries since a global outbreak in 2022 and 2023.

After smallpox was wiped out in 1980 and vaccinations against it were stopped around the world, Mpox showed up in central, east, and west Africa.
