In a nail-biting encounter at Kolkata, Australia clinched a hard-fought spot in the Cricket World Cup final after a tense three-wicket triumph over South Africa.

The victory sets the stage for a showdown against India in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad.

Australia’s journey to the final was marked by exceptional performances, with Pat Cummins’ side displaying both resilience and skill. After restricting South Africa to a challenging target of 212 by bowling them out, Australia faced a daunting chase. Travis Head’s explosive 62 provided a flying start, but spinners from the Proteas side made a strong comeback, leaving Australia at 137-5.

Despite losing crucial wickets, Australia inched closer to the target. The tension reached its peak when the seventh wicket fell with 20 runs still needed.

However, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc showcased nerves of steel, steering Australia to victory with 16 balls to spare in a thrilling climax.

The Proteas, having been reduced to 24-4 early on, witnessed a remarkable comeback led by David Miller’s determined century (101 from 116 balls). Despite Miller’s heroic effort, Australia’s persistent pursuit secured their place in the final.

South Africa’s initial decision to bat first in overcast conditions backfired as Starc and Hazlewood wreaked havoc in the top order. Miller and Heinrich Klaasen staged a commendable recovery, but it wasn’t enough to thwart Australia’s determined chase.

The match witnessed a momentum shift when the introduction of spin brought South Africa back into contention. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi made crucial breakthroughs, putting the pressure on Australia. However, Head and David Warner’s aggressive partnership, along with valuable contributions from Josh Inglis and Steve Smith, ensured Australia stayed on course.

South Africa’s refusal to concede was evident as Coetzee’s late strikes injected fresh excitement into the contest. However, Starc and Cummins held their nerve, guiding Australia to a thrilling victory with a well-timed boundary by Cummins.

As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the final clash between Australia and India, this gripping semifinal has undoubtedly added a new chapter to the Cricket World Cup saga.
