Advocate Padma Bahadur Shrestha has lodged a case of contempt of court at the Supreme Court against the government, alleging non-compliance with the apex court’s order to enact legislation concerning climate change.

The case stems from the government’s purported failure to formulate a law in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directive dated December 25, 2018. A hearing for the filed case is slated for December 26.

The Supreme Court, in its previous order, directed the government to establish a distinct legal framework addressing both the mitigation and adaptation aspects of climate change, with a specific emphasis on addressing the impact it generates. The case filed by Advocate Shrestha highlights the government’s alleged failure to adhere to the court’s directive, leading to the contempt of court proceedings.

The scheduled hearing on December 26 will provide a platform for the court to assess the merits of the contempt case and consider the government’s response. The matter underscores the significance of legal measures in addressing environmental concerns and enforcing court directives for effective climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
