Chief EC stresses following election code of conduct

Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya stressed the political parties and candidates contesting the upcoming local level election, to abide by the election code of conduct.

The local level election has been scheduled for May 13 this year in a single phase.

At a program organized by the Election Commission of Nepal on the 6th Election Day on February 19, Chief Election Commissioner Thapaliya issued a warning that the rebuke and retribution for violation of the election code of conduct will be intense.

Saying election is also like the sport football, he stated that the political forces and contenders come to ground the contest as similar as like the football players come to ground to play the sport.

“The Commission functions as the referee,” he said, adding further that the Commission should be a regulator if the parties and candidates taking part in the poll disregard the norms and regulations.
As per Chief Commissioner Thapaliya, there are over 250,000 election observers for the upcoming election. He also said the Commission is looking forward not to restricting or punishing any parties/ candidates for disregarding the code of conduct.

Advising the Commission employees and bodies under the same to perform activities taking the preparation as an opportunity.
Likewise, Election Commissioner Dr Janaki Tuladhar stressed the need for collaboration and coordination ensuring the agreement from all sides as the election is the base of democracy.

Similarly, Commissioner Sagun Shumsher Rana said that it was important to work in a collective manner to make the election an accomplishment.

Commission’s Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi said we all must extend support to the Commission in taking up the charge for conducting the poll in a free, fair, and fearless atmosphere.

Also speaking on the same occasion, Commission Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel suggested work so as to reduce arrears creating a suitable environment for the election. Chief Commissioner Thapaliya shared that the Commission will announce to reward and award 10 long-term serving and best performing employees.
