A total of 646 aftershocks have been recorded in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region following a devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri County on Tuesday morning.
According to local officials, the largest aftershock measured 4.4 in magnitude and occurred approximately 18 kilometers from the quake’s epicenter.
The powerful tremor has already claimed 126 lives and left 188 people injured. Rescue and relief operations are currently underway, with emergency services working to restore essential infrastructure like telecommunications, roads, and power in the affected region.
The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has also stepped in, sending 4,300 emergency relief items, including tents, quilts, and beds. More than 50 rescue workers were dispatched, along with emergency vehicles and supplies.
Despite the challenges, the authorities continue to focus on providing immediate support to the quake-stricken areas, while also preparing for potential further aftershocks.
Rescue teams are working around the clock to search for survivors and provide aid in the region.
