The 21st edition of the Machhapuchhre Pokhara Open & Veterans Tennis Tournament has kicked off on December 26, 2024. It will take place in Nepal’s tourism capital, Pokhara. The Kaski District Tennis Association organized the tournament. It will run until December 30 at the Pokhara Stadium Tennis Courts. The organizers announced at a press conference that final preparations have been completed.
Exciting Lineup of Matches and International Participation
This year’s event features men’s and women’s singles and doubles categories, alongside veterans’ matches in age brackets of 35+, 45+, 55+, and 65+. Players from Nepal and international participants from India, Bhutan, the UK, Japan, and Hong Kong have already arrived to compete. Notable Nepali players include top-seeded Pradeep Khadka, Jitendra Pariyar, and Saloni Tamang, alongside other stars vying for the top spot.
Prize Money and Trophies Await Champions
With over 100 players competing across various categories, the stakes are high.
• Men’s and Women’s Singles: Winners receive NPR 80,000; runners-up, NPR 40,000; semi-finalists, NPR 20,000, along with trophies and medals.
• Doubles: Winners bag NPR 30,000, with NPR 15,000 for runners-up.
• Veterans 35+ Singles: Winners earn NPR 60,000, and doubles winners take home NPR 20,000.
Promoting Sports Tourism in Nepal
Vinod Kayastha, Vice President of Nepal Tennis Association, highlighted that this is Nepal’s longest-running tennis tournament, contributing significantly to the promotion of sports tourism. Kaski Tennis Association President Rajkumar Gurung expressed confidence in the event’s ability to enhance Pokhara’s reputation as a sporting destination.
