Amid the ongoing 16-day campaign against violence against women, Nepal Police data discloses that a staggering 80% of gender-based violence (GBV) in the country is domestic violence.
Of the recorded domestic violence cases, 53% involve physical violence, while 47% entail mental violence.
Startlingly, statistics from the campaign highlight that 89% of women and girls facing violence are victimized by individuals known to them.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Manoj Kumar KC emphasizes the need for active community participation to combat this unfortunate trend.
In terms of domestic violence cases, 67% occur between husbands and wives. Over the past year, the police have registered 16,519 cases of domestic violence and 4,394 cases of other gender-based violence.
Breaking down the demographics, 63% of victims are girls aged 11 to 16, while 38% of perpetrators fall within the 10 to 25 age group.
The data also reveals that 50% of violence is committed through fear and threats, 35% through alluring with gifts, and 14% through promises of marriage.
Superintendent of Police Ranju Sigdel notes that a concerning 89% of the violence is inflicted by known individuals, including 12% by family members, nearly 23% by neighbors, and 0.46% by teachers.
The campaign underscores the urgent need for collective efforts to address and prevent domestic violence in Nepal.
